An unusually calm Detroit River peeks through gaps between the skyscrapers of downtown Detroit. On either side of the frame, the intricate cut stonework of the Book Tower adds distance and perspective to the image. Photographed some 30 floors above the city's streets on the topmost their of the rickety, rusting fire escape, I distinctly remember having to stop and catch my breath on our way back down to the ground floor of the 38 story beast.
