Richie Hawtin performs at crowd level during the Movement Festival in Detroit, 2007. This was the second year that Paxahau had run Movement (previously known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, or DEMF), and the last year that artists were at all accessible to the crowd. HE, and every other artist that performed on that stage stood on the same ground that the crowd did. I am impressed that the threat of some inebriated party goer messing with the gear never materialized (or perhaps it did, prompting the newer more distant stage setups). It took me about 30 minutes to muscle my way up to the front, and what resulted was an incredible learning experience from a DJ's perspective. The mixer he uses is a one of a kind, hand modified Allen & Heath Xone 92 (nicknamed Ctrl 92). He had each turntable running into two channels, and thus was able to make drastic changes to the EQ of the track by setting the new levels and swapping the faders. It was an exciting set to shoot, I despise flash and wouldn't have wanted to carry one anyhow so I had to time my shots with the lighting. From what I could tell, he also had some control over the lighting as it fell on cue with the music, so I was able to time my shots by counting the beats.
